What is a waypoint & scorecard?
Waypoints and scorecards are intrinsically connected. Waypoints allow goal owner to forecast their outcome targets at specific points in time along the journey to achieving an outcome. A scorecard displays the outcome's actual and forecast (waypoint) progress.
Waypoints are created against an outcome, as outcomes should be a metric such as currency, percent, or a number, but they are not mandatory.
A Waypoint is a date with a corresponding value which can be set as a number, percentage, or currency.
Scorecards are a new type of Dashboard to complement the existing ‘Explore’ Dashboard within the Dashboards module. Scorecards allow a user to create a collection of outcomes from one or many goals, and one or many goal owners, and chart them on a dashboard.
How to create a Waypoint
Waypoints are created when you create a new outcome, provided the goal the outcome relates to has a start and due date.
We believe in the 1/12th rule. That is, any goal should be reviewed 12 times during its lifecycle. So for an annual goal that equates to at least a monthly review. For a quarterly goal, thats a weekly review.
So when we create waypoints, we create up to 12, and they align to the start and due date of the goal. If the outcome's due date does not align with the goal's due date, for example, the goal due date is 30 June, and the outcome due date is 31 May, we only create waypoints up to 31 May, so there may only be 8 or 9 waypoints for that outcome.
When you are creating a new outcome, add the outcome title and due date. Then select the metric the outcome will track. In the example below we are tracking the number of qualified leads, so we have chosen our metric to be a number.
We are also tracking a cumulative total, that is our target is to qualify 100 leads by the outcome's due date. If you are tracking a discrete value, click discrete.
A cumulative measure is a running total, eg. achieve $1 million in sales this quarter. Whereas a discrete measure counts specific, separate values, eg. the number of sales made this month.
Add the value you are starting from and your target value. You will see the start and target value update in the progress component. The value on the left of the slider is the start value, and the value on the right of the slider is the target value. Again, in the example below we are starting from 0, and our target is 100.
Complete the outcome set up by selecting your confidence in achieving the outcome, and hit save.
The outcome editor will load the newly created waypoints, and display a chart to visualise the waypoints.
You can edit any of the waypoint dates or values by clicking on the field and making the necessary changes. And if you need to delete any of the waypoints, click delete in line with the waypoint you need to remove.
To add additional waypoints click the add waypoint button above the chart, add the data, and click save.
At each Waypoint target date, the outcome's progress will be recorded against the Waypoint.
Cumulative Vs Discrete
As mentioned above, a cumulative measure is a running total, eg. achieve $1 million in sales this quarter. Whereas a discrete measure counts specific, separate values, eg. the number of sales made this month.
When tracking a cumulative target, your first waypoint should start on the start date of the outcome, which is preset to the start date of the goal the outcome relates to, and reflect the starting value entered into the outcome. The last waypoint, will be the date the outcome is due and reflect the target value.
In the above example, you can see each waypoint value increases reflecting the running total.
When tracking a discrete target waypoints are different. Use discrete when tracking measures such as 100 sales per month, monthly margin of x%, or monthly NPS > 25.
Discrete waypoint data and chart is different to cumulative because you are working on achieving a specific value by each waypoint. In the below example, the same outcome is being used as above only it has been updated from cumulative to discrete. So where before the cumulative target was 100, now the discrete target is to qualify 100 leads in the period between each waypoint.
To capture actual progress against discrete waypoints, the outcome's progress will be captured at each waypoint date, then the outcome's progress will be reset to 0 (the starting value of the outcome is).
How to create a scorecard and add members
To navigate to the scorecard page, open the navigation menu, hover your cursor over, or press, the dashboard option, then select scorecards.
To create a new scorecard, click add new scorecard and give the scorecard a title. To add members to the scorecard you can search by team, or by individuals. Just start typing a teammate's name and click it once it appears. To add a whole team, click Search team, then type a team name and select it when it appears. Once you're done hit save.
Once a member has been added to the scorecard, that person can view the scorecard, and their outcomes can be added to the scorecard.
To edit an existing scorecard, click the more button in the bottom right of the scorecard.
To open a scorecard, click the scorecard title.
At the top of the scorecard you can see the name of the scorecard and who owns it. Only the scorecard owner can add and remove outcomes form a scorecard.
How to add an outcome to a scorecard
Click choose outcomes to monitor, then select the outcomes you want to add to the scorecard and hit add outcomes.
As you can see above, we can only see outcomes owned by the 2 members of the scorecard.
On the scorecard you can see the outcome title and owner's picture, and to the right, the confidence level in achieving that outcome.
Beneath the outcome title the outcome's progress is represented as a percentage value in the radial chart. Next to the chart you can see the outcomes current value, target value, and in the line chart, how the outcome is tracking, as a percent, against the waypoints that were set up. The blue line indicates progress, and grey is the waypoints.
At each Waypoint target date, the outcome's progress will be captured against the Waypoint. The blue line represents these progress updates and allows you to track outcome progress against the forecast Waypoints over time.
Clicking the outcome title will open the goal detail page and display the outcome's goal data.
Now go add your new scorecard to a meeting!
